Jean Fritz has written a lot of biographies for children on our founders and those in the Resolutionary War. They are veyr entertaining and my boys loved to read them.
A book I loved as a kid (probably apprpriate for ages 10-14) was Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes.

It was written in 1943 and was a Newberry award winner. Takes place in Boston during the buildup to the revolution; the book also deals with a boy overcoming an injury and learning some humility.
