DVD Review: 50 Outdoor Skills Everyone Needs To Know

This is a good DVD for the audience it is aiming for - the very beginning backpacker with next to no outdoor experience. The biggest flaw with the DVD is the misnamed title - it only has about 15 actual outdoor skills, the rest are basic descriptions of equipment like types of packs, knives, tents, food, etc. It is not the DVD I was hoping it would be - although there were a few things I learned. I particularly liked the idea of a survival scarf which can be used for a multitude of purposes. None of the topics are covered in depth and it's assumed if you want to learn more you'll watch a DVD, read a book, or take a class that is devoted to the topic of interest. The host, Dick Person, does seem like quite the character and I bet he'd be a fun trip leader - full of fascinating and interesting stories and tips.

From Amazon.com:
Whether you're a veteran camper or an occasional hiker, you'll find information to enhance your outdoor adventures in this program from expert guide and environmentalist Dick Person. Along with his assistant, Laura Zealand, Person provides advice for every possible eventuality: from basic skills such as how to build a "one match" fire to information on proper gear, staying safe and dealing with emergencies.
